EVIDENCE OF WONG CHOY 3rd ENGINEER OF THE "KHONG TUNG" AFFIRMED.
37
My name is Wong Choy and I was 3rd Engineer of the
"Kwong Tung" at the time of the casualty. Un the even ing
of Saturday the 31st January, 1948, passengers were em-
barking at roughly 7.0 P.M. when I heard a shout of "Save
Life" and "Fire". I was in the engine room, and I went
up on to the main deck to look. I saw a glow by the
stairway on the starboard side. I went down again to the
engine room to start the pump used in case of fire. After
a little while the lighting went out. We were using shore
current. I then started the ship's dynamo. There was
darkness for ten minutes. I returned to the main deck,
and I saw two hoses in use, and there was smoke which was
white in colour. I noticed that the shore lighting cable
had broken. There was still some noise but the fire had
been extinguished. The cable from shore was led from the
boat deck overside right aft on the port side. I belie ve
the cable to have been broken during the great confusion.
The foregoing is a true record
of the evidence I have given.
Sd. Wong Choy.
